GETTING STARTED

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome. Find answers to common questions about counseling with Ben, from session details to the healing process. We move at your pace. This page is designed to help you understand how we can work together and how to get started on your journey.

Our Work Together

What will our first sessions feel like?

During our initial time together, we will create a safe space to explore the concerns that brought you here and the life experiences that shape how you see the world. We will collaborate on a path forward that feels meaningful and manageable for you. By looking at both the broader picture of your history and the specific areas where you seek change, we can better understand how your thoughts and feelings are interconnected.

How do you approach the therapy process?

My practice is rooted in a client-centered heart. This means I prioritize seeing you as a whole, unique person—honoring your personality, beliefs, and preferences. I adapt my approach to fit your specific goals, ensuring our work together feels truly supportive, authentic, and respectful of your individual journey and pace.

How frequent are sessions and how long is each?

Most clients find it helpful to meet weekly or bi-weekly for 55 minutes. This rhythm helps us maintain steady progress and build a consistent foundation for healing. We will always communicate about what schedule works best for your current energy, lifestyle, and needs, making sure the pace of therapy feels right for you.

Are virtual or telehealth options available?

Yes, I provide online counseling through a secure, confidential video platform. Telehealth is a wonderful option that allows you to engage in therapy from the comfort and privacy of your own home. You have the flexibility to choose between meeting in-person or online, or combining both to best support your schedule and peace of mind.

What is the policy for changing appointments?

To support all who seek care, I kindly ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This small window allows another individual who may be waiting for support to use that time. I truly appreciate your understanding and respect for the time we dedicate to your healing and growth.

Clinical Modalities

METHODOLOGY

How will we work together?

I utilize several evidence-based tools, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). We’ll collaborate to find the path that feels most safe and effective for your unique story, ensuring you always feel empowered and comfortable throughout our time together.

SPECIALIZED RELIEF

How does EMDR help?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a way to help your brain process painful memories that may feel frozen in time. By using bilateral stimulation like tapping, soft tones, or eye movements, we can help reduce the emotional intensity of past trauma. This evidence-based process allows your mind to heal naturally, making the present feel much safer and more grounded while lowering the impact of triggers in your daily life.

FOCUSED RECOVERY CARE

Is CPT for me?

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a supportive, structured approach specifically designed to help you navigate trauma-related thoughts. Together, we will gently explore beliefs that may be causing you distress or keeping you feeling stuck. This process helps you develop a more balanced and compassionate perspective on your experiences, effectively reducing symptoms of PTSD and helping you regain a sense of clarity.

HEALING THROUGH MUSIC

What is Guided Imagery and Music?

The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) uses the power of music to explore your inner world in a relaxed, safe state. This creative approach is wonderful for those who find deep meaning in music and visualization. While full sessions are longer and typically handled outside of insurance, we can often weave adapted GIM techniques into our standard sessions to enhance your healing journey in a way that feels natural and accessible for you.

Fees & Insurance

How much will my sessions cost?

If you are using insurance, your session cost (copay or coinsurance) is determined by your plan. I recommend calling the number on your insurance card to confirm your outpatient mental health benefits. I am also happy to verify this for you during our consultation if you provide your insurance details beforehand. For those not using insurance, my standard private pay rate is $150 for each 55-minute session.

Can I use out-of-network benefits?

If I am not a direct provider for your insurance, you might still receive reimbursement. You can contact your insurance company and ask about 'out-of-network behavioral health benefits.' To support this process, I can provide a monthly superbill for you to submit to your provider for potential partial reimbursement.

What is a superbill and how does it help?

A superbill is an itemized document of our sessions that includes the necessary clinical codes for insurance. You would pay for your session at the time of service, then send this document to your insurer. Depending on your plan, they may mail a check directly to you to cover a portion of the cost.

Are the listed insurance plans always covered?

While I am in-network with the providers listed on this site, specific coverage can vary based on your employer’s group plan or your state of residence. We will work together to confirm your specific benefits and any required authorizations before we begin our clinical work.

How are payments handled safely?

To make the process as seamless as possible, all payments—including insurance copays or private fees—are handled through a secure, HIPAA-compliant client portal. You can securely save a card on file for automatic processing at the end of each session, allowing us to focus fully on your healing.

The Good Faith Estimate policy?

To ensure transparency, legal guidelines require healthcare providers to give an estimate of expected costs to clients who are uninsured or choose not to use insurance. You will receive a written Good Faith Estimate clearly outlining these costs before our first session so there are no surprises.
